Starwood Hotels is one the biggest hotel companies globally and is headquartered at White Plains in New York. This hospitality ownership and management organization own, franchises, manages and operates a large number of resorts, hotels, vacation ownership properties, residences and spas through its nine brands.
Starwood Capital, then known as Starwood Lodging, founded the Starwood Hotels and Resorts in order to reap benefits from the tax break. At the outset, Starwood Lodging owned several hotels solely across North America under various brand names. Its first international expansion was in 1944 when it purchased the Westin Hotel Company in Japan from Aoki Corporation. In the year 1999, Starwood launched its ‘W’ Hotels brand and possibly the highlight of Starwood’s expansion plan was the purchase of the Le Méridien brand in 2005, which helped expand Starwood’s operations in Europe tremendously. In the September of 2005, Starwood launched aloft – an entirely new hotel brand catering exclusively to business travellers. The company plans to grow aggressively and is targeting 500 aloft hotels globally by 2012.
